In
Year 5 our English and Mathematics work is based on the Primary Framework for
Literacy and Mathematics.
In all other
curriculum subject areas we have customized and adapted the QCDA schemes of work
to suit our school and our pupils’ needs. We aim to give them a broad base in
their Primary education. Each child’s individual needs will be met when possible
enabling them to achieve to the highest level.
A very brief
summary of the objectives for Year 5 follow below.
English
The
Literacy class will have an emphasis on speaking, listening, responding, group
discussion, interaction and drama.

Key
objectives of the course:
To multiply and
divide any integer up to 10,000 by 10 or 100 and understand the effect.
To order a given
set of positive and negative integers.
To use decimal
notation for tenths and hundredths.
To relate
fractions to division and to their decimal representations.
To calculate
mentally a difference such as 8006-2993.
To carry out
column addition and subtraction of positive integers less than 10000.
To know by heart
all multiplication facts up to 12x12.
To carry out long
multiplication of a two-digit by a two-digit number.
To understand
area measured in square centimetres; understand and use the formula in words
"length x breadth" for the area of a rectangle.
To recognise
parallel and perpendicular lines, and properties of rectangles.
To use all four
operations to solve simple word problems involving numbers and quantities,
including time, explaining methods and reasoning.
Science
The Year 5
pupils will learn about:

Keeping healthy:
The children
learn that there are many aspects to keeping healthy. They learn about the
heart and how the heart beat is affected by exercise.

Changing sounds:
Through this
unit the children learn that sounds are produced by vibrations and that these
vibrations travel from the source through a variety of materials.

Earth, sun, moon and planets:
In this unit the
children learn about the shapes and relative sizes of the Earth, su , moon and
planets. They learn how they move relative to each other and how these
movements relate to night and day.

Life cycles:
Through this
unit the children learn that plants and animals reproduce as part of their
life cycle and that in every life cycle there are distinct processes and
changes.

Gases around us:
Through this
unit the children learn that gases are material and can be distinguished from
solids and liquids by their properties.

Changing state:
Through this
unit children consolidate their ideas about changes of state which can be
reversed.
Geography
-
Map work and atlas skills:
In this unit the
children learn how to use an atlas and learn map symbols and grids.

Comparing localities:
The children
study life and climate in Madrid compared to life in a rainforest and tropical
climate.

Should the high street be closed to
traffic?
This unit provides an example of a focused investigation for
children to develop field work skills. It involves collecting and analyzing
information.

unit the children find out about the way people lived in the ancient Greek

In this unit the
children use their own experience as a springboard to find out about the
influence that the ancient Greeks continue to have on our lives.

What were the effects of Tudor
exploration?
In this unit the children learn reasons for and results
of exploration of the world by people in the sixteenth century and its impact
on sailors, settlers and indigenous people.

How can we find out about the Aztec
civilization?
In this unit the children learn about the Aztec
civilization from archaeological sources.
