FRENCH AT KEY STAGE 3
Pupils at St. Anne´s School are introduced to the learning of French in Key Stage 2. At Key Stage 3, language learning is seen in a wider context. Pupils have the opportunity to understand and appreciate the different cultures and communities where French is spoken- and as they do so, begin to think of themselves as citizens of the world.
Aims:
· To ensure that language learning is a positive and enjoyable experience for all pupils
· To inspire confidence through the achievement of individual personal best
· To develop linguistic capabilities to the highest degree
· To raise awareness of other countries and cultures
· To promote communication skills which are transferable to other areas of life
The four skill areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing are explored fully. All teaching is done through a variety of styles so as to maximise the pupils’ experience of French and appeal to a range of different types of learners. Thus, pupils become actively involved in their learning.

· identify patterns in the target language
· develop techniques for memorising words, phrases and spellings
· use their knowledge of English or another language when learning the target language
· use previous knowledge, context and other clues to work out the meaning of what they hear or read
· use reference materials such as dictionaries appropriately and effectively.
Pupils should be able to:
· listen for gist or detail
· skim and scan written texts for the main points or details
· respond appropriately to spoken and written language
· use correct pronunciation and intonation
· ask and answer questions
·
initiate and sustain conversations
· write clearly and coherently, including an appropriate level of detail
· redraft their writing to improve accuracy and quality
· reuse language that they have heard or read in their own speaking and writing
· adapt language they already know in new contexts for different purposes
· deal with unfamiliar language, unexpected responses and unpredictable situations.
The programme of study covers 3 main topic areas:
· everyday activities
· personal life and social relationships
· the world around us
Pupils use a textbook (Métro) and supplementary workbook; there is also a wide range of resources and up to date facilities to provide a stimulating and enjoyable environment for learning and presentation of work. White boards, Powerpoint slide shows and the Internet are used regularly, as well as a number of useful grammar and language websites to support and consolidate learning.
