At St. Anne’s School in Key Stage 4, the IGCSE Physical Education is a compulsary course. We believe that all pupils should be given the opportunity to not only develop their ability physically across a wide range of sports, but also to deepen their knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the concepts involved in physical activity.

 

IGCSE SYLLABUS BREAKDOWN

 

The syllabus is in two sections: Theory 40% and Practical 60%

 

Practical Element  (60%)

Section 1 – Practical Performance in four activities. (50%)

Section 2 –Analysis and Improvement in ONE of the four activities. (10%)

 

COURSE SUMMARY  

Candidates will be able to:

The scheme of Assessment is comprised of two units:

 1hr 45min written paper (40%)

 

Question paper will be in TWO sections A & B

 

Section A         short questions on three units they have studied:

 

1 Factors Affecting Individual Performance, 2 Health, safety and training,               3 Reasons and opportunities for participation in physical activity.

 

Section B:        three structured questions, one from each of the units studied.

 

Health, Fitness and the Factors affecting Performance
This section includes the following aspects: health and fitness for physical activities.

Principles of Training
This section includes the following aspects: Fitness Training; Physiological Factors; Psychological Factors; the Acquisition of Skill; Technological Developments; Safety and Risk Assessment.

Factors Affecting Individual Performance and Participation
This section includes the following aspects: School; Changing Attitudes; Social Grouping; Leisure Time; Facilities Available.

Social and Cultural factors Affecting Participation
This section includes the following aspects: Sponsorship Media; Social and cultural aspects; Influences of local and national providers.

The candidates’ learning from the subject content specification is underpinned by its application in the course. Candidates should also be able to take appropriate action to improve performance through its analysis and evaluation.

 

Assessment

 

A full mock exam in year 11

Homework assignments
Periodic testing, short answer questions.
Practical Perfromance examination (live / video)

The type of assessment will vary between topics, but wherever possible the assessments will seek to relate theory to practice and practice to theory.
